Initially, critics believed that employees enrolled in HDHP plans would refrain from getting proper medical attention because of the higher initial out-of-pocket costs. However, recent research provides compelling evidence that employees make sound health care decisions while participating in these types of plans. Not surprisingly, employees with HDHPs have been found to be more engaged in their health care, using cost-based Web tools and other information nearly twice as often as employees enrolled in traditional health plans — leading to strong savings for both the employer and the employee.1
